Dermatology is the branch of medical science which deals in the study of diseases related to skin, hair and nails. Both medical and surgical aspect are included in dermatology. The doctor who deals in skin problems is known as Dermatologist or simply a Skin Specialist. Dermatologist not only treats the skin problems with medicines, but also applies different available ways and means in order to treat various skin problems.

History of dermatology is quite old. First school of dermatology was established in 1801 at the renowned Saint Louis Hospital in Paris, France. First ever text book on dermatology by Willan and catalogues by Albert were printed during the same era of early nineteenth century.

Recent advancements in science have changed the ways a skin specialist treats his / her patients. Different types of techniques used by all the dermatologists include excision, cryosurgery, hair removal, hair transplant, laser therapy, cosmetic surgery, phototherapy, liposuction, radiotherapy and many more.

Dermatologists have been using artificial light sources for the treatment of skin conditions for centuries including the Finsen lamp for lupus vulgaris since 1899, wound healing and rickets since 1901, and psoriasis since 1925.

The term LASER is abbreviation for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". The first laser became available in 1960 and its use in the field of dermatology began in the mid-1970s. Laser has provided various unique advantages in the management of a number of common vascular and pigmented conditions of the skin and mucous membranes, not only in adults, but in infants and children as well.

Laser treatment


Initially, Argon and Carbon Dioxide lasers were commonly used to treat benign vascular birthmarks and haemangiomas. In the last two decades, major advances in laser technology has revolutionized their use in the treatment of many skin conditions and congenital defects, including vascular and pigmented lesions, and the removal of tattoos, scars and wrinkles. Nowadays there is a wide spectrum of laser and light technologies such as quasi-CW mode lasers and pulsed laser systems, far more superior to the previous technology are available for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation.

Prof. Dr. Ikram Ullah Khan is the pioneer in introducing laser technology for skin care in Pakistan. He has the highest post-graduate degree in dermatology, FRCP from Edinburgh, and got his basic training in dermatology and skin laser treatment from Birmingham Skin Centre which is one of the largest and the most prestigious institutes in the world. Upon his return from the United Kingdom in 1996, he joined the department of dermatology of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad, and applied all his knowledge and experience in the betterment of his department. He has always been very helpful and keeps on teaching his juniors and updating them on the latest developments in the field of dermatology. He has the honour of establishing the first lase technology clinic in Islamabad. Now he has two such clinics in Islamabad and one in Peshawar.
